On November 30th, 1978, the late, great, legendary, and immortal Seattle Slew retired from the sport of thoroughbred horse racing. Although his racing days were over, his life of greatness was about to soar to a whole new level of achievement. As a stallion, the mighty Slew would set records that awed the world and left all the rest in the dust. At the time of his passing on Tuesday morning, May 7th, 2002 at the advanced age of 28 and 1/2 years [On the 25th anniversary to the exact day of his Kentucky Derby victory] the mighty Slew had sired an astonishing 102 multiple graded stakes winners; the majority of which were at the Grade 1 Level. By November 2005, that number had topped out an incredible 117. On April 21st, 1981, one of those 117 stakes winners was born at Claiborne Farm in Paris, Kentucky. His name was Swale, and he would become one of Seattle Slew's greatest and most beloved sons. In this great book, brilliant author Timothy J. Thompson details Swale's life in the most dynamic way. He covers his foaling, birthing, breaking, early training and fine tuning. Then, he takes and in-depth look at each of Swale's fourteen races. You will move from the paddock, into the starting gate, across the finish line, and into the Winners' Circle. It is so compelling, you will feel as if you are the jockey as Swale Storms to victory in some of the sport's most significant contests. Afterward, Swale's untimely tragic end is described, and the way in which he fought to live examined in great detail. Then, Mr. Thompson provides the reader with a vivid description of the inquiry that followed. You will learn what was the most likely cause of Swale's death, and how it happened. The final chapter discusses what might have been had Swale been allowed to finish out his racing career and enter stallion duty. This leaves the reader with a sense of wonder, and is very thought provoking. There are 25 outstanding photos included for the reader's enjoyment, along with Swale's race record and pedigree. After reading this great book, you will love and admire Swale, and never forget him. Read more
